Background Info:
The waters between the tip of
South America and the tip of the
Antarctica are known as the Drake
Passage, named for Sir Francis
Drake, the British pirate and
explorer. The tip of Argentina is
characterized by a broad passive
margin continental shelf extending
to include the Falkland Islands. The
Chilean side is an active margin
condition which includes the
southern extent of the Chile Trench.
Within the Drake Passage the
continental rise does not appear to
be as extensive as at other passive
margin conditions.
