Introduction - Principal Features
Exploration of the ocean depths, in
various parts of the world and
through various technologies, has
begun to establish a comprehensive
picture of the makeup of the ocean
basin.
|
Background Info:
The ocean basin is typically
divided into two regions:
|
| continental margins |
deep ocean basins, |
 |
 |
|
Each of these
areas is uniquely varied. The form
of these areas results from tectonic
forces that have been operating for
millions of years. Study of these
areas and features can thus tell us
much about the history of our
planet and the forms it has taken in
the past.
|
Objectives:
Students will explore the features of the ocean basins:
- Students will interact with digital models of portions of the sea floor that describe the physical features of each formation.
- Students will research the geologic process which led to the formation of sea floor features in relation to the theory of plate tectonics.
